From the President’s Pen - August 2008
Our July 8th general membership meeting was very well attended. We had about 40 people present. Our special speaker for this meeting was Devoe Moore. Mr. Moore has been involved for a number of years as a developer in Tallahassee. He shared a PowerPoint presentation about his Antique Auto Museum. This museum is home to a number of very special automobiles from our history. If you have not visited this site, you should plan to do so. He also spoke about his plans for a new upscale shopping center next to the museum at I-10 and Mahan Road. The shipping center, Colonial Pinnacle at Cross Creek, will have over a million square feet of stores and office space. The site will also have a movie theater and several restaurants. This site is about 20 miles from the Courthouse and will have an impact on our community. We appreciate Mr. Moore taking the time from his busy schedule to speak to our meeting.
This summer is election season in Jefferson County. We have over 30 candidates running for county offices. Your chamber sponsored a series of four candidate forums this year. The first two forums were held July 14th and 15th. They featured the contestants for five contested races for constitutional officers. The third and fourth forums were held July 21st and July 22nd and they featured the County Commissioners and the School Board candidates. All of the forums were very well attended.
Special appreciation is extended to Dick Bailar for organizing the forums this year. His committee members included Ron Cichon and Bob Davison. OUr program for our next general membership meeting on August 12th will focus on Jefferson County as a tourist destination. This program will be organized by Gretchen Avera and Nancy Wideman of our Tourism Development Committee. We often travel to far away places for vacation and adventures when there are interesting and exciting things that we have not experienced in our own backyard.
Thanks for your interest in the work of your Chamber. Let us continue to work together to keep Monticello-Jefferson County a great place to live. Let us also do all we can to help make our community an even better place to make a living.
Until next time,
Bob Davison
